Benchmarks are rough guides, engagement varies a lot by niche, channel size, and whether it's a Short or long-form video.

How to calculate YouTube engagement rate

The most common formula measures interactions against how many people watched:

(Likes + Comments + Shares) ÷ Views × 100

Engagement rate is more useful than raw like or comment counts because it's relative to audience size, a video with 4,000 likes on 100,000 views (4%) is engaging harder than one with 4,000 likes on 1,000,000 views (0.4%), even though the like count is identical.

What's a good YouTube engagement rate?

As a rough guide, based on likes and comments per view:

Smaller channels often post higher engagement rates than huge ones, a loyal audience reacts more per view than a broad, casual one. Compare yourself to channels your size, not the biggest names.
