Engagement rate is more useful than raw like or comment counts because it's relative to audience size, a video with 4,000 likes on 100,000 views (4%) is engaging harder than one with 4,000 likes on 1,000,000 views (0.4%), even though the like count is identical.
What's a good YouTube engagement rate?
As a rough guide, based on likes and comments per view:
- Under 1%, below average; the video may not be resonating.
- 1–3%, healthy; typical for a video that's landing with its audience.
- 3–6%, strong; viewers are actively reacting.
- Above 6%, excellent; a highly engaging video (common on smaller, tight-knit channels and well-targeted Shorts).
Smaller channels often post higher engagement rates than huge ones, a loyal audience reacts more per view than a broad, casual one. Compare yourself to channels your size, not the biggest names.
