How the YouTube earnings calculator works

YouTube creators earn from ads through the Partner Program. The number that matters for estimating income is RPM, revenue per 1,000 views, after YouTube takes its 45% cut and after accounting for views that aren't monetized. Multiply your views by your RPM and divide by 1,000, and you get an estimate of ad revenue:

CPM vs RPM, what's the difference?

CPM (cost per mille) is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions. RPM (revenue per mille) is what you actually keep per 1,000 video views after YouTube's share and after un-monetized views are factored in. RPM is usually a good bit lower than CPM, and it's the more honest number for estimating take-home income, which is why this calculator uses it.

Typical YouTube RPM by niche

Rough industry ranges to sanity-check your estimate (your mileage will vary):

Niche Typical RPM range
Finance / Business / Make money $8 โ€“ $25
Tech & Software reviews $3 โ€“ $10
Education / How-to $4 โ€“ $12
Health & Fitness $3 โ€“ $9
Food & Cooking $3 โ€“ $8
Beauty & Fashion $2 โ€“ $6
Gaming $1 โ€“ $4
Vlogs / Lifestyle / Entertainment $1 โ€“ $4
Music $0.50 โ€“ $2

What affects how much YouTube pays?

Ad revenue also isn't the whole story, many channels earn more from sponsorships, memberships, merch, and affiliate links than from AdSense. Treat this as the floor, not the ceiling.
